Okay, this may be a tad too cynical, but take a little Buddhism, add a military regime, throw in a Nobel Peace Prize laureate (imprisoned) and you get something which is just begging for a Hollywood celebrity to make it their cause du jour. Well, there’s no need to beg, because it’s done already. Be warned: what you’re about to see is cheese personified. I’d keep a bucket handy to puke into, just in case.
All jokes apart, what’s happening in Burma is truly egregious. Just today, a Japanese journalist was shot dead for filming the junta. Someone managed to get a video of it, and the entire Japanese news report of the incident is posted on YouTube. It isn’t gory, but it’s certainly stomach-wrenching. And this time I’m serious.

You are being a tad cynical. Carrey’s not doing it to promote himself. Also, everyone campaigned for Mandela’s freedom and it was won, so why not for Aung San Suu Kyi? It’s true. Most Americans DON’T know who she is, and if a celebrity does make it their cause du jour, at least ten more people will learn something. I see no harm in that. Or reason to be cynical.

i don’t know. it definitely does some good, and no harm. but somehow it doesn’t rub me the right way. and i’m not quite sure why. it just doesn’t seem genuine to me. it seems more self-serving than anything else.
