In 2001, in Nepal, a four year-old, Preeti Shakya, was chosen to be a ‘Living Goddess‘ (or the “Royal Kumari” of Kathmandu), to be worshipped and adored by millions of Hindus and Buddhists. Well, that is until she hit puberty, at which point she would lose goddess status and come back down to earth, as it were.
Preeti (called Sajani after her deification) came to the West and the U.S., in particular, in June of this year to promote a documentary about herself called, of course, ‘Living Goddess‘. The high priests were not too happy with the whole thing, and decided to revoke her goddess status, because she broke with tradition and traveled abroad without permission. Now, it seems they’ve had a change of heart and letting bygones be bygones, and children be children, have decided to make her a goddess again.
Wow. Goddess yesterday, girl today, goddess tomorrow and girl again, the day after. That’s some trip, baby! I’m going to discuss getting god status for The Great Ganesha with those Kathmandu priests, man. They seem… flexible.
