Lakshmi and Rushdie
The Moor’s Last Sigh: ‘Twas not meant to be…

‘Tis a sad, sad day here at The Great Ganesha. So sad in fact, that we are declaring tomorrow to be a National Holiday (at least in the US) and we all hope you follow suit. It came as a shock to us all. Like a bolt of lightening from the clear, blue sky. Like a piece of chicken in a veg. fried rice.

We are, of course, talking about the divorce. When we heard about it, we all had to sit down. All of us. Simultaneously. This wasn’t so difficult since there’s only one of us. But it would have helped if we weren’t standing near a barbed wire fence at the time. That really hurt. Even more than the news of the divorce.

Here’s what the Times said:

The three-year marriage of Salman Rushdie and Padma Lakshmi has ended, their publicists said Monday. ”Salman Rushdie has agreed to divorce his wife, Padma Lakshmi, because of her desire to end their marriage,” his representative, Jin Auh, said in a statement. ”He asks that the media respect his privacy at this difficult time.” [link]

So she dumped him. Salman-ji can survive a fatwah, but not a marriage four marriages. What is this world coming to? Well, you know what they say: The fifth one’s the charm. And while the moor is sighing, the culinary beauty continues to cook…his goose?

Interesting phrasing of the publicist’s release, don’t you think? Every word so carefully placed to construct SR as a figure of sympathy.

Has it been only three years? Oh well, he should go back to his writing. This marriage thing obviously doesn’t suit him.

ck: well, that’s the publicist’s job, isn’t it? guess salmanbhai’s dollars are being put to good use…

nikhil: looks like he’s working on it.
