Xavier’s College (Bombay) and the Da Vinci Code (Updated)

Fellow ex-Xavierites, look at the person in the forefront of the protests against the Da Vinci Code movie.

…the head of the Catholic Secular Forum has begun a ‘hunger strike until death’. [link]

That “head of the Catholic Secular Forum” is none other than apparently not Fr. Joe Dias! Yes, Not the same guy who took over in 1997 (thanks Conrad), a few years after “Pop Con”, a.k.a. Father Conrad’s reign as the Principal of Xavier’s circa 1994. Not the same guy who tormented all the young girls about wearing shorts in the canteen. And yes, its not the same guy who disallowed the holding of hands and various other similar “nefarious” activities at Xavier’s. Sounds something like what they do in some of the Middle Eastern countries…it’s no surprise then that he’s got the muslims to protest with him.

Ok, rash generalizations being made there, but a hunger strike for The Da Vinci Code? And I mean even just protesting a movie, for God’s sake (pun intended)!! It’s a bit much, I think. It’s a movie for crying out loud! Firstly, it’s fiction. Secondly, I am by no means a religious person, but if a fictional movie can incite you to waste your time on protesting (and in Joe Dias’ case, going on a hunger strike) then I think it’s time you reexamined your faith, brother! Besides, if you really want to protest, then do it against something justified. Find some other really worthy causes.

Read the original BBC article about Joe Dias and the Da Vinci protests.

And he made sure that now a whole lot of people, who otherwise would have skipped the flick, will go watch it.

I hope he is happy now.

    CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY

The gentleman who co-ordinates the Catholic Secular Forum is a layperson – Mr.Joe Dias. He is NOT the fomer Principal of St. Xavier’s College.
Besides, Fr, Joe Dias, SJ took over as Principal at St.Xavier’s College on 1st July 1997(and NOT 1994)from his distinguised predeccessor Fr.Emil D’Cruz, SJ(and NOT Fr.Conrad)

got my facts mixed up there, i guess. thanks for the correction (duly noted). in which case we now have two nutcases named joe dias on our hands…

I thought the Great Ganesha was the real nutcase, isn’t it ? By such scandalous remarks that have been made through this site, what are you trying to achieve. Any Film as a form of creative expression must also take into account the sensibilities of the people of this country. But there seems to be no limit to fanaticism and fundamentalism in some minds whose very objective is to vitiate the sensibilities of different communities.
